2017 Steinterrassen Sandstein
German natural wine pioneer Stefan Vetter tends old, biodynamic vineyards in Franconia, which was once known as THE place to find quality-made wines. Sylvaner fell out favour to other varieties, but when the grape is nurtured, it can reveal fantastic, Chablis-like minerality.
This wine is pure, deep & intense, and so utterly mineral that you almost drink the stones themselves. It is not a particularly aromatic variety, but what it lacks in smell makes up for delicious structured acidity with a saline finish.
When I first tried this wine, it was a shocking revelation of what the grape can do.
