2020 Scrambled Sticks
When life gives you lemons...
This wine resulted from a vineyard mishap that ended up mixing all the different grape varieties. Each season this wine is created from the field blend, hence the name 'Scrambled Sticks.'
Ross & Bee Maloof essentially make five lots of wine which are each aged & fermented a little differently before being blended at bottling. Roughly 50% of the wine is aged in amphora.
Lot 1: Destemmed Pinot Gris, left on the skins in amphora for nine months.
Lot 2: Direct pressed Ribolla Gialla & Tocai Friulano is fermented in Amphora.
Lot 3: Open-air fermentation of whole cluster Pinot Gris with 30-day skin contact.
Lot 4: Ribolla & Tocai Friulano fermented in neutral Burgundy barrels for 30 days skin contact.
Lot 5: For good measure, a dash of Chardonnay, fermented and aged in neutral oak.
The magical recipe then creates a stunning Friulan style orange wine that is highly structured with tannic notes of tea, dried stone fruit, and faint floral aromas. Certified organic and biodynamic farming for the grapes, all native yeast fermentation, no filtering or fining, and nothing added except a small amount of sulphites at bottling.
